I bought this fishing pole for my mentally-disabled sister, who for some reason, decided she wanted to go fishing. Since my sister's fishing interests are obviously limited, this basic rod and reel at an extremely reasonable price was worth ordering and it did not disappoint. With assistance, my sister was able to use the pole with ease.It occurred to me that if any parents are wanting to start their tykes with a fishing pole, this would be an excellent choice for them to order. When I received these poles....I thought I had made a mistake. They were pretty colors, but those reels looked really small. But after having fished with these now for dozens of days at a time in the canals and ocean....they are really great little things. I ordered two, and the first thing to note is that you end up with random colors. If your heart is set on a specific color, these might not be for you. I got a red one and a blue one when I ordered them (color selection choice did not seem to be a selectable option).Now, I see a lot of complaints from people saying they tangle up....but these are open reels, and just like ANY open reel, they can tangle if you don't know how to use them properly. First, make sure your drag is set correctly. I personally keep them pretty loose, since I don't see the point with the size fish you are going to be catching, particularly if you are using the stock line (6lb? test, or maybe 4lb, it's very light). So, don't crank it down hard. Second, once you make a throw, manually flip down the balun, and rotate slowly to make sure you have it grabbing correctly. Third, if that throw has a lot of slack, use your finger to keep a little tension on that line as you reel it tight. If you do that, this reel works great. I have both a 9 year and an 11 year old who are using this, and have only tangled it twice after a couple of weeks of use, and it was because they got excited and started reeling in too fast on a loose line. They have used both poles and cast a couple of hundred times as this point without an issue.That monofilament that comes with it is very light, but it holds knots very well, I haven't lost any hooks to slipping loose.Personally, I think this is a great pole to teach a child on that pays attention, and throws decently. Realize that this is a shorter pole, but it's got nice action. I and the kids are throwing consistently 40 feet or so without trying on each try.Make sure you go over the pole once it's received and tighten down all the little clamps, they seem to come very loose from the factory. I had to tighten the top and bottom to make sure it was snugly on the reel. and then I had to push the foam pieces tightly as well. Nothing has come loose since the original purchase.I presumed that these are freshwater poles due to the price, but we are using them in Saltwater and they are fine, we just make sure to wash them down thoroughly in freshwater after each use, and we have been lightly oiling them every two weeks. We've caught trout, bass, and redfish so far, with a max of about 8lbs. We accidently caught about a 10lb trout with this line and it was too heavy for the line that comes with it.Great starter pole or inexpensive backup or loaner. My kids love to fish and instead of having to drop by grandma's....I bought these. I have a 6, 8, and 10yr old and not one of them could use these more than 10min without the line getting tangled. I spent more time fixing them than we did actually fishing.
